My Favourite MUA

Silvana Mitkovski asked us to do her a favour and help out with a hair and make up competition she’s entering. So being obliging chaps we said OK. These are straight out of the camera, which goes to show what a great make up artist can do. Natural light.

Tashi Fantasy Shoot

I decided to approach this set of images with some self imposed rules. Photography can be infuriating because these days anything is possible. When there are too many options, you try to explore them all and you tend to lose sight of what can make a project unique. With Tashi, I used a single lens, an 85mm 1.2, and a single light, a Profoto B2 600 with a gridded dish. Instead of spending all my time agonising over which lights to set up or swapping out lenses, I found myself concentrating on the tone and style of the shoot. Composition and expression became far more important. I also avoided any “look at my clever photography” shots featuring lens flare and too narrow depth of field (which I usually use all the time!) I’ll be doing this more often now.

One day, I’ll have the guts to turn up to a shoot with just a single camera, a single lens and no lights.

Soon. Soon.

Jelena

Jelena won a competition to be the current “Face of EchoNites”, a Serbian social organisation. so we popped over to Sun Studios in Richmond for an afternoon with Vivian Ashworth doing hair and makeup. Our intent was to go out in the street later on for some location shots but it was like ten degrees, so that idea didn’t last long. Thanks to Sheridan for helping out and carrying the heavy stuff in cyclonic winds!

Roller Derby

Starting to put together a little series of the many subcultures here in Melbourne. Things that don’t make it into the mass media. We went down to the Showgrounds last week and the ladies in the Roller Derby were kind enough to let us into their world.
